L-S Football Team Looks for Perfection in Playoff Opener

Warriors believe ball control and turnovers are key to challenging Gloucester.

Lincoln-Sudbury football coach Thomas Lopez may face one his biggest challenges this season playing Gloucester Tuesday night at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. However, Lopez believes the basics of ball control and limiting turnovers are the keys to victory in the semifinals of the MIAA Division 1A EMass playoffs. "The best way to stop scoring is to keep control of the ball, because they can not score if they do not have the ball," said Lopez. "We have to play mistake-free, no dropping a pass, missing a block or throwing an interception." Keeping the Division 1A defending champs off the field has been a challenge for its opponents as the Fighting Fisherman have not lost in two seasons. The Northeastern Large champs, who are ranked No…

L-S, Newton South Have Eyes On Thanksgiving Day Victory

Holiday rivalry still means something to these teams.

Playoffs and standings may no longer be on the line for Lincoln-Sudbury or Newton South football teams on Thursday, but that does not mean neither team will overlook their 36-year-old Thanksgiving rivalry. With a home victory, the Warriors will finish undefeated in the Dual County League (Large), while a Newton South upset over the league winner would be strong finish to a tough season. "Even though mathematically this game does not matter, it still matters to us," said L-S senior Zach Smerlas. "It is still a Dual County League game and we are trying to go 5-0 in the DCL (Large)," said L-S senior Ben Forman. The Warriors (7-3, 4-0) are coming off  four straight conference wins, during which they clinched their first playoff appearance …

Warriors' Rushers Lead L-S Over Boston Latin And Into Playoffs

Warriors clinch the Dual County League Large title; will play in postseason for the first time since 1997.

The Lincoln-Sudbury football team needed a victory Friday night to snap a lengthy playoff drought. To help achieve that goal, the Warriors' three-pronged rushing attack did what they have all season — deliver. With senior Marc Pace and sophomores Brian Carroll and Christopher Giorgio each reaching the end zone, L-S's top rushers helped lead the Warriors to a 24-7 road victory over Boston Latin, a Dual County League Large title, and a postseason berth for the first time since 1997. "It is pretty exciting to do something for the first time in 13 years," said Pace. "We have this opportunity as seniors that only a few teams in the state have." Pace combined for 104 yards and two touchdowns on nine touches, while Carroll totaled 108 yards and …

Lincoln-Sudbury Football Teams Aims to End Playoff Drought Tonight

Victory over the Wolfpack secures a postseason berth for the Warriors.

Lincoln-Sudbury football coach Thomas Lopez wrote two dates on the locker room wall this week: 1987 and 1997. The first date is when the Warriors last lost to Boston Latin. The second is the team's most recent playoff appearance. If the Warriors can keep the win streak alive against the Wolfpack on Friday night, they can also snap their lengthy playoff drought. "We look at that every single day," said senior linemen Ryan Swoyer. "It is a reminder of all the teams that came through here and that we have a chance to do something that has not been done in a while." When L-S (6-3, 3-0) travels to Boston to play the Wolfpack (3-6, 1-3), the Warriors will be one win away from a Dual County League Large title and a postseason berth. While Boston …

Lincoln-Sudbury Football Team One Win Away from Postseason Berth

Warriors' 10-7 victory over Colonials puts them in the driver's seat to win DCL Large.

When the Lincoln-Sudbury football team looks back on its 2010 campaign, it will likely recall its early November game against rival Acton-Boxborough as the turning point to the season. A win would put them in control of the Dual County League Large, while a loss would make it very difficult for the Warriors to earn a playoff berth. After Friday night's grind out 10-7 victory over the Colonials, and with two games remaining against less-talented opponents, a playoff berth almost seems certain. In what was a grind out game for both sides, the Warriors (5-3, 3-0) managed to score early and slow down the Colonials' offense. "In all honesty Waltham, Westford, and Acton are all good teams," said L-S coach Thomas Lopez of his last three opponents…

Warriors Right Their Ship in Second Half against Westford Academy

Late field goal and interception helps Lincoln-Sudbury overcame a 14-point halftime deficit.

It was a tale of two halves for the Lincoln-Sudbury football team on Friday night, as the Warriors mounted their fourth comeback victory of the season. Capped with a 36-yard field goal and an interception, Lincoln-Sudbury overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to beat host Westford Academy, 17-14. "It was really nice to see the way our team responded," said L-S junior quarterback Matt Cahill. "Being able to come out and really believe we were going to win this game." The Warriors won the game on a field goal from junior William Twyman, which was set up by a 36-yard drive. The kick with 2:18 left in the game was a perfect redemption for the junior, who had missed his first extra point of the season earlier in the game. "I just think about the…

First-Year Starters Play Big Role In Warriors Rushing Attack

Giorgio, Carroll and Pace have been pivotal for the Lincoln-Sudbury football team this season.

The Lincoln-Sudbury football team's three starting rushers may have lacked experience previously, but they haven't had trouble playing a pivotal role for the Warriors this season. The first-year backs, who rushed for 305 yards last week against Waltham, have grown throughout the year and added an extra dimension to a pass-heavy Warriors offense. "They bring guys into the box to try to stop the run because those guys are making big runs," said junior quarterback Matt Cahill. "All of a sudden it opens up passing lanes and guys are getting single covered. They really help all around." The Warriors began this season expecting senior Marc Pace, junior Ricky Antonellis, and sophomore Brian Carroll to line up behind Cahill. A fractured elbow …

L-S Football Team Runs Over Waltham For A Dominant Win

Warriors' rushing attack too much for Hawks.

Despite the cold weather Friday night, the Lincoln-Sudbury football team had no issue staying warm offensively against Waltham. The Warriors pounded the Hawks on the ground by breaking three runs for over 50 yards and running in four touchdowns on their way to a 35-13 victory at home. "We played a lot better offensively and defensively tonight," said L-S coach Thomas Lopez. "You have to give the offensive line their credit. They blocked well." L-S rushed for 305 yards on 37 attempts. Sophomore Brian Carroll led the way with 123 yards on 10 attempts. Senior Marc Pace combined for 134 total yards, while sophomore Christopher Giorgio rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns. "We finally put the offense together," said Carroll. "The O-line made …

Specific Coverages Play Key Role for L-S Secondary

Warriors football team practices specialization when it comes to coverage, using different player packages based on an opponent's strength.

Different players fill different roles. When it comes to the Lincoln-Sudbury secondary, head football coach Thomas Lopez selects his starters and coverage based on the opposing team's strengths. "If we are playing against a team that spreads us out like Wayland, we try to get quicker kids in the game," said Lopez. "If we are playing a team that tries to beat us up, like Reading or Waltham, we try to get bigger players in." Against a more pass-capable team, senior Marc Pace and junior Jack Harris are more likely to start. When facing a run-heavy team, sophomores Henry Guild and Joseph Miller play more. Junior Connor Young and sophomore Brian Carroll commonly play in both scenarios. "(Starters) are changing every week, but everyone has got …

Early Deficit Creates Tough Ending for Warriors

Lincoln-Sudbury's three-game winning streak is snapped by Concord-Carlisle.

CONCORD — With seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, "Sweet Caroline" was already playing through the speakers at the football field at Concord-Carlisle High School. While the fans chanted "so good" along with Neil Diamond, little had gone  well for Lincoln-Sudbury. The Warriors had just failed a fourth-down attempt and were watching the Patriots kill down the clock on their way to a 28-9 home victory. "There was very little redeeming quality in today's game," said L-S coach Thomas Lopez. "It was a matter of execution. We did not execute." The Warriors had showed some hope on their previous drive when they managed to force a fumbled on a kick return attempt by Patriots junior George Craan at 9:47 in the fourth quarter, following their …
