Sudbury Shines During 11th Annual Telethon and Auction

HOPEsudbury’s signature event raises nearly $70,000 on Saturday to help struggling families during tough financial times.

Sudbury residents sang, danced and entertained the crowd while volunteers operated a phone bank, all for the cause of raising money to help neighbors who find themselves in a tough spot with bills they can’t pay due to unemployment, underemployment or just the ever-rising costs of running a household in 2012. It was the 11th HOPEsudbury Telethon and Auction on Saturday at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, which began in 2001 by residents who were looking for a way to unite and support the community after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11,2001. HOPEsudbury co-President Marilyn Martino said the organization assisted 10 or 12 families that year, a number which grew to 69 last year. “It’s going fantastic so far,” Martino said at 6 p.m. on …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Charitable donation disturbing

Resident Andrew MacEntee upset over donation to charity.

A recent MetroWest Daily News article on Charitable Donations as compiled by the Attorney General’s Office uncovered some disturbing information. Appendix II of the AG’s Solicitations Campaign Report indicates that only 35 percent of funds collected for the Sudbury Police Officers Union Local 370 went to the charity.  Charity: Sudbury Police Officers Union Local 370 Solicitor: Silver & Blue Promotion Total revenue from campaign: $20,347 Donation to charity: $7,121 or 35 percent The bottom-line numbers reflect poorly on the Sudbury Police Department and Town as a whole. Perhaps those responsible in the Police Department for the hiring of Silver and Blue Promotion consider other options in light of the data? Andrew MacEntee Brookdale Road

As a follow up I searched for the Sudbury Police Officers Union charity’s IRS Form 990 form to learn how efficient the charity itself is. Trouble was I could not find the required report. Does it exist?. Bruins, Lincoln-Sudbury Alumni Raise Funds for Milley Scholarship

Fundraiser in honor of fallen Sudbury Army Ranger.

First Lt. Scott F. Milley of Sudbury, a 2005 graduate of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and a cum laude graduate of the University of New Hampshire, was an Army Ranger who gave his life serving his country as a member of the 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army. He was killed in Afghanistan last November. Milley was popular and charismatic, and while in high school, was named captain of his varsity hockey team. After his untimely death at age 23, the Sudbury community honored “Scooter” and his family with a campaign that decorated most of the homes, streets, schools and public buildings in town with yellow or red, white and blue ribbons. Sen. John Kerry, Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and Gov. Deval Patrick were among the thousands …

HOPESudbury Telethon Takes Place on Saturday

Ninth annual fund-raiser to be held at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.

The Town of Sudbury is known for many things: history, quality education and excellent restaurants, to name a few. But the real strength of this community is its ability to come together for a good cause. After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, people in Sudbury wanted to know what they could do to help. Town Manager Maureen Valente, along with other town officials, met and soon formed HOPESudbury, a diverse group of residents, town employees and business people who banded as a community to help others who might need support — emotionally, financially or otherwise. On Saturday, from noon to 10 p.m., residents of Sudbury will again band together at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School for HOPESudbury's ninth annual telethon. This live …
