(EDITOR'S NOTE: The following was submitted by Deb Bennetts.) Local animal lovers can share their holiday spirit by donating food, toys and treats for homeless dogs and cats through Best Friends Pet Care’s 12th Annual Animal Angel Tree campaign. All donations will benefit the pets cared for by Buddy Dog Humane Society of Sudbury. “The holiday season is always difficult for our local animal shelters,” explains Liz Gill-Cano, manager of Best Friends Pet Care in Sudbury. “This year, Hurricane Sandy has put an even bigger burden on shelters because so many lost and abandoned pets need help. We know our Angel Tree program will make a difference for many pets in need.” The Animal Angel Tree in the Best Friends lobby is decorated with paper …

Millicent is a sweet cat with a mild personality. She was brought to Buddy Dog Humane Society by a rescue group that wanted to make sure she got a good home. Millicent is good with other cats and small dogs, and also does well with kids 8 years old and older. If you decide to adopt Millicent, or any of the cats or dogs at Buddy Dog, you can win a prize. Just mention this video, or any Pet of the Week video on Sudbury or Acton Patch.

Donations will be accepted through Sunday at the Wayland Stop & Shop.
It took only five hours to fill a 40-foot Stop & Shop truck full of donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy in Breezy Point, N.Y. "I am overwhelmed by people's generosity," said Cynthia Hill, who spearheaded the effort and worked with the Wayland Town Center location of Stop & Shop to secure the truck, driver, gas and workers to pack the truck. From 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday, residents from Wayland, Sudbury, Weston, Hudson and other locations dropped off clothing, food, tools, cleaning supplies and more. They donations flowed with such abundance, that Stop & Shop will be providing a second truck. The plan is to accept donations Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The truck will then head to New York on Tuesday. Hill said that plenty of…

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Anselm’s Church is focused on assisting those in our area who may need help providing a meal or essentials for their family. Everyone should be able to share in God’s bounty, especially at this time of year. However, we realize there are some, who for one reason or another cannot provide the basics of family life. Individuals or families may be suffering quietly, maintaining their dignity and hoping for a better day. If so, St. Vincent’s of St. Anselm’s may be able to be of assistance not only in providing a great meal, but with other basics as well. St. Vincent’s Society at St. Anselm’s has a small to modest fund, which can provide a solid Thanksgiving meal, or …
Local businesses salute our service men and women with special deals year-round as well as on Veterans Day.
(EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this story said Subway was giving out free six-inch subs. A Subway representative tells us this is inaccurate; Subway restaurants have replaced the local promotion of past years with a national-level partnership with Wounded Warrior Project, and they area donating $111,112 to help veterans in lieu of offering free sandwiches locally.) A number of local businesses are saluting veterans, military servicemen and women, and their families this Veterans Day by offering local discounts, specials and promotions. Here's a guide to specials in the area, mostly taken from themilitarywallet.com. Two important notes: Free food: Store discounts: Free activities:

The clothing has already poured in, but the need for construction equipment and tools remains great.
Breezy Point Project organizer Cynthia Hill said Thursday the donations of clothing have already come pouring in for the truck that will leave from the Wayland Town Center Stop & Shop with donations for Hurricane Sandy victims. What she really needs, Hill said, are the construction and clean-up items below (those with an asktrisk are especially important): Hill is working with the as-yet-unopened Stop & Shop location at Wayland Town Center to collect items for the Queens, N.Y., neighborhood of Breezy Point, which suffered terrible devastation during Hurricane Sandy in the form of both flood and fire. Stop & Shop is donating a 40-foot truck, the driver, gas and help to load the truck, but donations are needed. Hill said that several …
A truck parked at the Wayland Town Center Stop & Shop through Sunday will carry donations to Breezy Point, N.Y., an area devastated by flood and fire during Hurricane Sandy.
It's been about 10 days since Hurricane Sandy ripped through sections of New York and New Jersey, gashing the landscape and leaving behind wounds that will heal, but with scars. In Wayland and Sudbury, power lines and trees bore the brunt of Sandy's wrath, but those small inconveniences pale in comparison when the images of locations in Sandy's direct path cross television screens and magazines. Wayland resident Cynthia Hill on Sunday night watched a segment of "60 Minutes" focused on the section of Queens, N.Y., known as Breezy Point. It's a community that Hill first encountered after 9/11, when Hill and her husband, David, traveled to a fire station in New York to meet some of the firefighters who lost colleagues the day of the attacks. …

Sudbury residents sang, danced and entertained the crowd while volunteers operated a phone bank, all for the cause of raising money to help neighbors who find themselves in a tough spot with bills they can’t pay due to unemployment, underemployment or just the ever-rising costs of running a household in 2012. It was the 11th HOPEsudbury Telethon and Auction on Saturday at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, which began in 2001 by residents who were looking for a way to unite and support the community after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11,2001. HOPEsudbury co-President Marilyn Martino said the organization assisted 10 or 12 families that year, a number which grew to 69 last year. “It’s going fantastic so far,” Martino said at 6 p.m. on …
