Lincoln-Sudbury misses three penalty kicks, allowing Brookline to advance to the secional semifinals.
There were players on the sideline with cramped muscles while others were simply gasping for air, trying to dig for one last ounce of energy. After 40 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods Wednesday afternoon, it was obvious that host Lincoln-Sudbury and the Brookline boys soccer teams had given everything they had in their Division 1 North Sectional quarterfinal match. But when L-S junior midfielder Chris Kafina's penalty kick, the team's fourth against Brookline's Matt Hillman in the penalty kick round, sailed over the net giving Brookline the win, every player on the Brookline bench, with their blond-dyed mohawks, found the strength to sprint on to the field to celebrate in a massive pig pile inside the 18-yard box. "So much …

Denny Cakert's tally launches Warriors into Division 1 North quarterfinals.
Senior Cole DeNormandie saved the Lincoln-Sudbury boys soccer team from elimination in the Division 1 North Sectional tournament Monday afternoon, but it was fellow senior Denny Cakert who propelled the Warriors past Andover and into the next round. Positioning himself in front of the Andover goal, and with time running down, DeNormandie received a bobbled pass, spun around, and hit the top left corner of the goal to send the match into overtime. In double overtime, Cakert received a headed pass from junior Chris Kafina on a throw-in, and blasted the game-winner with 1:30 remaining for a thrilling 3-2 victory. The "golden" goal was the senior's second score and game-winner of the season. "I knew (Russell) Clay had a strong throw and …

Lincoln-Sudbury boys avoid a repeat C-C second- half comeback.
Lincoln-Sudbury boys soccer finished off the regular season by beating Concord-Carlisle today, winning 2-1 in a rematch of the league winners. A second-half goal by L-S senior Cole DeNormandie gave the Dual County League (Large) leaders their 2-1 home victory over their undefeated DCL (Small) rivals. "C-C is the best in the state," said L-S head coach David Hosford. "To be able to come out and prove ourselves was nice." The goal came off a hurry-up left side throw-in by Warriors junior Forest Sisk at 28:43. Sisk placed the ball front left of the goal where DeNormandie headed the ball over senior goalie Cam McGrory's hands. "Cam is a good goalie and he usually does not make mistakes," said DeNormandie. "Sisk has a long throw so he took it …

Four goals, with less than 20 minutes left in the match, helps seal a 6-1home win over Newton South.
A late surge by the Lincoln-Sudbury boys soccer team turned a slim lead into a dominant victory. With less than 20 minutes remaining, the Warriors tallied four goals Tuesday afternoon in a 6-1 home win over Dual County League opponent Newton South. "As a whole (the match) was a little bit a tale of two halves," said L-S coach David Hosford. "It was only when we decided to control the ball and to stay onsides that we were able to get the advantage. The score was definitely not indicative of how Newton South played." L-S (3-1) took its first lead, 2-1 at the 12:42 mark in the first half, with a horizontally spinning goal kick from forward Connor Jacobson. Jacobson received the ball through a cross from midfielder Eric Gandrup, who was …

Warriors coach plans return trip to Vermont farm to get in an old-fashioned workout.
It will be their footwork on the field that decides whether the Lincoln-Sudbury boys soccer team is able to repeat the success of a year ago. So it may surprise some that the Warriors will end their first full week of practice with a healthy dose of manual labor. "We're putting them out of their element, into another element," coach David Hosford said. That element is a 40-acre homestead in Vermont where Hosford's parents live. There, the boys will move bales of hay, stack wood, and help farmers as part of a team-building exercise over Labor Day weekend. Hosford is in his fifth year coaching at Lincoln-Sudbury, and this will be the second year he is taking his team north. "We did it last year," Hosford said, "and at the end of the year a…
