Sudbury Shines During 11th Annual Telethon and Auction

HOPEsudbury’s signature event raises nearly $70,000 on Saturday to help struggling families during tough financial times.

Sudbury residents sang, danced and entertained the crowd while volunteers operated a phone bank, all for the cause of raising money to help neighbors who find themselves in a tough spot with bills they can’t pay due to unemployment, underemployment or just the ever-rising costs of running a household in 2012. It was the 11th HOPEsudbury Telethon and Auction on Saturday at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, which began in 2001 by residents who were looking for a way to unite and support the community after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11,2001. HOPEsudbury co-President Marilyn Martino said the organization assisted 10 or 12 families that year, a number which grew to 69 last year. “It’s going fantastic so far,” Martino said at 6 p.m. on …

HOPEsudbury Has High Hopes for 11th Annual Telethon and Auction

The organization provides financial assistance to struggling Sudbury residents.

Whether it’s unexpected car repair, an overdue rent payment or a dental bill, individuals and families in Sudbury can find themselves in a temporary financial bind with limited options for relief.  HOPEsudbury can assist with some of those needs with The Hope Fund, which can provide grants of up to $500 once a year for individuals and up to $1,000 once a year for families to help them cover a short-term financial crisis brought about by an unexpected expense. The money is raised by Sudbury residents with the goal of making sure that neighbors and friends, whose struggle is often silent, can get some financial relief and feel supported by the community. Christina Granahan, Telethon co-chair and board member, said part of the challenge is …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Many Thanks from HOPEsudbury

The popular charitable organization shares inspiring stories from within Sudbury.

We’ve been the recipient of our fair share of good deeds lately and wanted to make sure others knew about them, too. First, our thanks to 8-year old Rachel Turkington, a student at Haynes Elementary School, who graciously asked her friends to forgo bringing gifts to her June birthday party and instead collected backpacks and schools supplies for our annual fall drive. We’ll take the supplies over to the children at Sandra’s Lodge and Mary’s Place, two local family shelters, next month. (The drive officially begins on August 13. Items can be dropped off at Goodnow Library, The Flynn Building and The Grange Hall through September.) Next, thanks to the great children and families who participated in Vacation Bible Adventure (VBA) Camp at …

This collection is for children who are traumatized by an accident, whether their own or a family member, a death in family, an abuse situation, or by transfer into a new foster home. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: HOPEsudbury Offers Thanks to the Community

Tenth annual telethon deemed a success.

In 2002, the first HOPEsudbury Telethon & Auction was an unproven commodity: Would performers sign up? Would individuals and businesses donate? Would the community tune in? Would viewers bid? The answer was a resounding “yes.” The Telethon is now a Sudbury tradition which marked its 10th anniversary Nov. 5, raising an impressive $63,000 for The HOPE Fund and other HOPEsudbury charitable causes. We would like to extend our thanks to all. Thanks to our major sponsors: Emerson Medical at Sudbury, Tudor Investment Corp., Granahan Investment Management, Inc., Longfellowʼs Wayside Inn, Ted & Eileen Pasquarello, The UPS Store (Sudbury), Bosse Sports and Health Club, Coldwell Banker, Sudbury

HOPEsudbury Raises More Than $62K With Telethon

Tenth annual fundraiser demonstrates "Power of Community."

HOPEsudbury marked its 10th anniversary with its signature telethon and auction at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School on Saturday.  The community showed its support as HOPEsudbury received more than $62,000 in donations.  HOPEsudbury, a nonprofit organization formed after the Sept. 11 tragedy, provides short-term financial assistance to local residents and families with emergency or unexpected financial need through the HOPEsudbury Community Assistance Fund (The Hope Fund).  HOPEsudbury co-president Jill Stansky said the nonprofit has displayed tremendous progress in the past decade with its telethon and auction.  "The first year, we didn't know what we were doing," Stansky said. "Ten years later, it's like clockwork." The telethon …

Good question! After 9/11 a group of interested citizens got together and tried to come up with a way to generate a response to 9/11 from Sudbury. Both the Sudbury 9/11 Memorial Garden and HOPEsudbury are offshoots from that effort. Funds from the the first telethon supported a firehouse in NYC that had heavy casualties in 9/11 and employed a former Sudbury firefighter. Since then HOPEsudbury's …   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Tune Into the HOPEsudbury Telethon and Auction on Saturday

HOPEsudbury board member Tracy Stewart reminds local residents of the fundraiser's 10th anniversary.

“The Power of Community, Ten Years Strong” is HOPEsudbury’s theme for 2011, its 10th year. Ten years ago a group of community-minded citizens formed HOPEsudbury (Humanitarian Outreach Project) to “bring out the best in our community while supporting others in need”. This year the HOPEsudbury Telethon and Auction will also celebrate its 10-year anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 12-10 p.m. at Lincoln-Sudbury and shown live on Sudbury TV (Comcast 8 and Verizon 31). More than 175 items — sports tickets and memorabilia, weekend getaways, restaurant gift certificates and much more — will be auctioned. An array of Sudbury’s most talented citizens — from children to senior citizens — will perform throughout the day in support of this true …
