The Board of Selectmen sided with the advice of town counsel over the method of four articles submitted by Ralph Tyler.
"I see where this decision is going. This is why we need change in this town." And with those words, Sudbury resident Ralph Tyler walked out of Town Hall Tuesday night during the Board of Selectmen's meeting, convinced his attempt to add four warrant articles for Annual Town Meeting would not go through. The Board granted Tyler time to argue why his method of submitting four articles together with the required number of signatures should be allowed. Both Chairman Larry O'Brien and Selectman John Drobinski said they did not feel comfortable going against the advice of Town Counsel Paul Kenny. "My initial concern is as John said, I would be far stretched to give it serious thought," O'Brien said. " You’ve been at Town Meeting as long as I …

Sudbury’s Board of Selectmen opened the last meeting of 2012 on Dec. 18 with “heavy hearts,” according to Selectmen Chair Larry O’Brien. He said both the Board of Selectmen and residents of Sudbury are deeply saddened by the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. “It will take the community years and years to recover from the tragedy,” O’Brien said. He said that he has written a letter to the Selectmen in Newtown, offering condolences and inviting the board to reach out to Sudbury Selectmen if the board can assist with Newtown’s recovery process. O'Brien noted Sudbury has also been a victim of school violence, referring to the fatal stabbing of James Alenson, 15, at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School on Jan. 19, …

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Sudbury Patch has reached out to Both Larry O'Brien and State Rep. Tom Conroy for comment. Conroy has not responded. O'Brien said in an email he would be "glad to speak with you so that you can report accurately rather than using second hand information," but has yet to comment beyond that.) The people of Sudbury should know that Larry O'Brien, Chairman of our Board of Selectmen, testified on Beacon Hill and told the Massachusetts Congress that the votes of the people of Sudbury should be ignored. Larry testified that the Sudbury Town Meeting Vote should be ignored and Myron Fox, our Town Moderator, failed to allow proper debate. Larry O'Brien told the State Legislature to step out and allow Larry to appoint 9 of his …

As voters, we require transparency, fairness, and equity from our elected officials. It is in a spirit of fairness that Sudbury registered voters should request that the Sudbury Board of Selectmen consistently adhere to the tradition of multiple decades wherein a Sudbury selectman in the third and last year of his or her term and having effectively, faithfully and honorably served the citizens of Sudbury become Chair of the Sudbury Board of Selectmen. Selectmen Drobinski and O’Brien have been the beneficiaries of this same chair-process and tradition spanning decades. Mr. Drobinski has been the chair five times since 1987 while Mr. O’Brien has been chair three times and most recently for the fourth time with Mr. Drobinski’s singular vote. …

Tim Fong chooses his words carefully as he describes the events at his restaurant on May 9.
Tim Fong, owner of Lavender Asian Cuisine & Bar on Boston Post Road, appeared at Tuesday night's meeting of Sudbury's Board of Selectmen at Town Hall to discuss the controversy that's been raging through Sudbury for two months. Various town officials stand accused of staying at the restaurant past the hours specified on its liquor license following Town Meeting on May 9. Concerned residents have wondered whether officials abused their positions by demanding service from an establishment in violation of a liquor license that the officials themselves are in charge of approving. Chairman Larry O'Brien, who previously admitted to being at Lavender past the stated hours, recused himself from the meeting before any discussion of the Lavender …

Chairman Larry O'Brien explains why he needs to exit from the meeting before discussion of the Lavender incident on May 9 begins.
Sudbury Police Chief Richard Glavin appeared at Tuesday night's meeting of the Board of Selectmen to discuss the warning letter he sent to Lavender Asian Cuisine and Bar on Boston Post Road regarding an incident on May 9, when several town officials were found to be present in the establishment past the time it was supposed to close, according to the terms of its liquor license. "As I indicated at the last meeting, I have recused myself from any discussion involving Lavender," said Selectmen Chair Larry O'Brien, who has admitted to being present in the restaurant on the night in question. "When you recuse yourself, it is required that you leave the room. On that note, I will leave the room at this time." The meeting was then turned over …

It is apparent to me that Selectman Chairman Larry O'Brien's losing political opponents are orchestrating a smear campaign that will win them the spoils that they failed to achieve at the ballot box in this most resent Town election for the Selectman seat won by Mr. O'Brien. Shame on you! Selectman O'Brien's only breach at the Lavender Restaurant that evening was his social proclivity which I applaud! Chairman Larry O'Brien did nothing wrongful here and those who attack him on this overwrought matter do so without merit and with a not-so-hidden agenda. Respectfully submitted, Stan Kaplan 98 Victoria Road

Dozens of Sudbury residents upset about a power company's plan to remove trees and brush from South Sudbury against their wishes packed into Tuesday night's Board of Selectmen meeting at Town Hall. Residents complained that NSTAR left them notices on their doors announcing the intention to begin the work, without proper approvals from them or town officials. The notices did not indicate just how aggressive the work would be, they complained. Chris Lutz said NSTAR ripped up his kids' playground, their sandbox and a flower garden that included newly-planted roses that could not have possibly been interfering with power. He said NSTAR's work, which he said occured on June 4, shortly before the company agreed to a moratorium, significantly …

Residents Rita and Sid Bourne have had enough of the recent actions by town officials.
Recently Sudbury has witnessed: Informed residents view the political culture of Sudbury as unethical and unhealthy. Comments in the Sudbury Patch and the Sudbury Town Crier reflect frustration but not surprise. We relative newcomers (nine years) are both surprised and appalled. Actions at BOS, ZBA, and the last Town meetings hint of key decisions made with little regard for relevant facts, and tight control of information. Sudbury must wake up. Power and influence are reclaimed by action, not by words. Let’s insist on a government that is truly for the people of this lovely town. Our approach must include parents, seniors, business owners, and elected officials outside the “in group.” Let’s consider: Citizens, please voice your concerns …

Selectman Haarde was passed over for Chair of the BOS at this past Town Meeting much to the astonishment of many. It is, without a doubt, an action that exemplifies the ethics of Selectmen O'Brien and Drobinski. In the May 11, 2011, edition of the Sudbury Town Crier online edition, the following quote was printed: “It’s tradition after each Town Meeting to elect the senior member of the board who is running for re-election,” said John Drobinski, the previous chairman. Chair O'Brien stipulates that Selectman Haarde did not make a compelling case. Where was the case made for O'Brien? Where was the case made for any senior member? Why is it that tradition was broken? Why is it that tradition seems to be broken only for Selectman Haarde? …
