Will Sudbury Selectmen Support June Election on Tuesday?

Town meetings on tap this week.

Tuesday's Board of Selectmen's meeting may be the most anticipated meeting in months. Expected to be discussed is the Board's position on allowing the town to piggyback the June special election for U.S. Senate: (Agenda item) 17. Conscience?? What about their responsibility to represent the will of Sudbury citizens who have already voted overwhelmingly (twice) to increase the board from 3 to 5 selectmen? Is there anything else left for interpretation?   more ›

Aramark Boasts Healthy Range of Lunches At Lincoln-Sudbury

The company that operates the high school cafeteria provided an annual update to members of the school committee Tuesday night.

Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School students continue to enjoy a wide variety of healthy and satisfying meals in the cafeteria, according to officials with Aramark Education, the management company that operates the Lincoln-Sudbury food service program. They said they offer a minimum of 25 entrees to help every student find a meal that meets his or her individual needs and tastes. Popular options include the fruit and yogurt bar, a new whole wheat pizza, a made-to-order burrito bar, and soup and salad combos, such as a tomato soup and grilled cheese offering on Wednesdays, said Bob Harden, food service manager with Aramark. He said specials change frequently so that students can have their favorites and also try something new. He said …

Lincoln-Sudbury Responds to Newtown Massacre

Superintendent Scott Carpenter says he’s proud of student response to the tragedy.

At its first meeting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn., the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee heard from Superintendent/Principal Scott Carpenter regarding the school’s response to the fatal shootings of 20 first-graders and six educators by a 20-year-old gunman who also killed himself. “We all were shocked by the tragedy. It was hard for many people, particularly given this school’s own history,” said Carpenter, referring to the fatal stabbing of James Alenson, 15, at the high school on Jan. 19, 2007, by a fellow student in an unprovoked attack in a boy’s bathroom. John Odgren, now 22, is currently serving a life sentence in the case.    Carpenter said L-S students quickly organized on Facebook…

L-S Superintendent May Be on the Way Out

Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Superintendent and Principal Scott Carpenter will find out Jan. 14 whether he’ll be offered the superintendent’s position in Harvard.

Superintendent Scott Carpenter advised members of the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee at their Tuesday night meeting that he has been named one of three finalists for a Superintendent’s position in the town of Harvard. “I have spent two decades in high schools, and the opportunity to go to a grade K to 12 setting would involve growth,” Carpenter said.  He said that the decision to apply for another job does not diminish his deep commitment to Lincoln-Sudbury.   “I love Lincoln-Sudbury. It’s something I feel very at home with,” Carpenter said, describing a moment of hesitation before he hit the send button to email his application for the Harvard position. “It is sometimes a conflict between growth and where your heart is.” …

L-S Teachers Receive Support as Contract Talks Stall

School committee members reviewed current and future financial goals during a well-attended meeting at the high school.

Several budgets are being developed to fit various scenarios, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Finance Director Michael Connelly told members of the LSRHS Committee at their Tuesday night meeting, which was attended by dozens of high school teachers, staff members, parents and alumni of the school, who urged the committee to put a priority on cost of living increases for the high school's teachers. "Our students spend at least seven hours per day surrounded by these teachers," said one parent from Lincoln, who praised the level of dedication and sincere interest in students' futures.  A member of the Class of 2011 told anecdotes about teachers who were willing to email her during their summer vacations to help her on her path to …

User Groups To Help Finance New Lincoln-Sudbury Field Lights

Friday night lights will shine a little brighter at LSRHS by Spring.

Details of a plan to finance a major upgrade of the lighting on the high school's football field were heard at a Tuesday night meeting of the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee. The current lights were installed in 1991 and are ready for replacement, proponents of the project said. Steve Hall, president of L-S Youth Lacrosse, said user groups have already begun planning to contribute to the project. Those groups include Boys Lacrosse, Pop Warner Football, Youth Soccer, Girls Lacrosse, the Lincoln-Sudbury Booster Club and others. "There is a field crunch in town," Hall said.  User groups would benefit by not having to pay to rent portable lighting for their games, costs which can run up to $10,000 per year, he said. Hall …

Internet Outages Frustrate Staff at Lincoln-Sudbury

Superintendent/Principal Scott Carpenter reports that the frequent outages are interrupting summer work and delaying responses to parents who email the school.

Staff members who work all 12 months of the year are being inconvenienced by frequent Internet outages, according to Superintendent/Principal Scott Carpenter, who updated the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee on the issue at its Tuesday night meeting at the high school. "It's been failing us since we were closing down the school year," Carpenter said, blaming a firewall that is nearly eight years old and will soon fall into the category of an "orphaned" product, meaning that it has become so old that its manufacturer will no longer provide support or service for it. "It means every time it goes down, someone has to go and flip, flip, flip to get it back up and running," Carpenter said, complaining that the frequent …

Dear Scott and LS SC, You have a $25 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET. Use some of that money to fix this very small problem. This should not even be a topic for discussion at the SC meeting. This should have been taken care of along time ago.   more ›

Better Vision of Budget Discussed at L-S School Committee Meeting

Auditing of business office and medical claims trust brought up by Carpenter.

The Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee discussed during its Tuesday meeting formulating a vision for the school's budget for the next three years, which is in progress, in order to facilitate better planning for the school community. One Committee member was concerned about the timeline for the goals. "These are all very lofty goals," School Committee Member Patty Mosque said. "When will we know?" An update of an audit process proposed by Superintendent/Principal Scott Carpenter was also brought forth at the meeting. Carpenter said he was looking to audit business office function and the medical claims trust. Upon receiving quotes from three firms, Carpenter recommended for the Committee to retain the services of Delanson, …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Gerald Quirk to Run for L-S Committee

The Scotts Wood Drive resident is a certified high school teacher who wants to keep L-S synonymous with top public education.

I am writing to announce my candidacy for the Lincoln-Sudbury School Committee and hope to earn your vote on Monday, March 26.   I currently work as a business and legal executive for a biotech company. Building a biotech company and a world-class high school require comparable skills, including a long-term vision and a willingness to make difficult decisions.  In biotech, where it can take years to develop a new medicine, poor decisions today can result in dire consequences for patients a decade from now. Similarly, our failure to provide the educational resources required for our children to thrive in our increasingly complex, global economy will only be revealed in the future, when it will be too late to make a difference.   But this is…

Technology, Budget Take the Lead at L-S Committee Meeting

Also discussed were possible adjustments to the softball field.

A rundown on uses of technology in the classroom were among agenda items discussed by administrators during the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee meeting on Tuesday. Principal/Superintendent Scott Carpenter spoke of teachers using wikis, or sites that allow any visitor to contribute and make changes to a page, in their instruction. Also in progress is an iPad pilot program that 20 teachers are currently participating in. Carpenter also expressed concern over future technology upgrades, specifically the wireless network, which could cost up to $660,000 to update. "Those are the capital expenses we the district have to keep an eye on," he said, adding that the update isn't in the plans for the next five years. The Committee also…

If LS is seriously thinking about spending $600K on upgrading the existing wireless network within the school buildings....l have a bridge that they might be very interested in buying. Either this is very irresponsible journalism, or the individuals who are presenting and assessing capital proposals need to be flogged.   more ›
