Registrar Says Internet is Critical to RMV's Future

The Registry has moved many transactions to its Web site in an effort to reduce waiting times at branches.

The Internet is key to the future of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles said Registrar and Watertown-resident Rachel Kaprielian. On-line use has already improved the waiting times at RMV branches, and improvements to technology should make the RMV's on-line system even better, Kaprielian said Monday at the monthly St. James Armenian Church Men's Club dinner in Watertown. She also discussed the controversial move of no longer mailing out license-expiration notices to Bay State drivers. The Registry is moving more and more to on-line transactions, with an incresase of 40 percent last year. "It takes seconds (to complete a transaction) instead of driving to a branch, and waiting in line," Kaprielian said.  Waiting times at branch …

Massachusetts Braces for Blizzard

Gov. Patrick: 'We are ready,' for massive snowfall.

State and local officials are urging everyone to stay off the roads in anticipation of a nor'easter that forecasters expect to result in heavy snow and whiteout conditions. Gov. Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency in advance of the storm that is expected to start mid-afternoon and last into tomorrow. "We expect blizzard conditions," said Gov. Patrick. "We are ready." Road crews have started pre-treating roads and will have 4,000 plows, sanders and salt trucks out today and tomorrow. The governor says the MBTA is running regular Sunday service today and tonight and planning regular Monday service. Flights out of Logan International Airport are already being cancelled, so Christmas weekend travelers are being urged to check with …
