Lincoln-Sudbury Responds to Newtown Massacre

Superintendent Scott Carpenter says he’s proud of student response to the tragedy.

At its first meeting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn., the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee heard from Superintendent/Principal Scott Carpenter regarding the school’s response to the fatal shootings of 20 first-graders and six educators by a 20-year-old gunman who also killed himself. “We all were shocked by the tragedy. It was hard for many people, particularly given this school’s own history,” said Carpenter, referring to the fatal stabbing of James Alenson, 15, at the high school on Jan. 19, 2007, by a fellow student in an unprovoked attack in a boy’s bathroom. Newtown Massacre Prompts Security Changes in Sudbury Schools

An anonymous donor offers to cover the costs of improving security at the front doors of Sudbury’s four elementary schools

At its first meeting of 2013, the Sudbury Public Schools Committee heard from concerned parents wondering about improved security procedures in Sudbury schools in the wake of a horrific massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, in which a 20-year-old gunman was able to kill 20 first-graders and six educators before committing suicide. “We’re not going to discuss specific plans in public, or in front of the cameras, but it will be addressed in executive session,” said Committee Chair Rich Robison, who said the purpose of being vague about the specifics of security measures is to avoid tipping off someone who may be looking for a way to circumvent those measures.   A week after the deadly elementary school attack in Newtown, Conn., that has rocked the the nation, some parents say their kids remain oblivious to the attack — and the danger.  Most teens and children are wrapped up in their own worlds. One mom of a middle-schooler told me instead of being worried about how the Newtown deaths would affect her daughter, she is more concerned that the girl is not aware enough of what took place. And there is only so much the schools can do. So this mom will spin out a scenario of danger and ask the daughter to think through how she might best respond.  If you are a parent, are you doing the same kind of 'coaching' with your kids? Patch Will Go Dark Briefly Friday Morning to Mark Moment of Silence for Newtown Victims

One week after the Newtown massacre, Patch and much of the Web world will go dark briefly at 9:30 Friday morning to join in the tribute to the kids and teachers.

  Patch is among the many websites which will display a tribute to victims of the Sandy Hook shooting over their sites tomorrow, Friday, at 9:30 a.m. According to Patch's sister site Techcrunch, the online campaign was inspired by a call for a moment of silence by Connecticut’s governor — and follows a coalition of tech leaders calling for more gun control. Techcrunch writes: The awareness strategy seems inspired by the SOPA [Stop Online Piracy Act] website blackouts from January. Instead of completely blocking functionality of participating websites, though, the tribute message can be closed to resume normal browsing.
