Former Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Chair Mark Collins was arrested Monday night and charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct.
Mark Collins, the former Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee chairman who was arrested Monday night at Fairbank Community Center, was released Tuesday afternoon without bail after being given a no abuse order. The no abuse order was issued on behalf of residents Robert Stein and Rick Johnson, who are listed as victims in the case. Collins is facing charges of assault and battery, and disorderly conduct. The assistant district attorney had asked Judge Robert Greco to release Collins under four conditions: Greco only issued the no abuse order. The police report alleges Collins was under the influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest. His lawyer, Gerald T. Anglin, said there was no appearance of intoxication at the time and …

(EDITOR'S NOTE: The following was submitted by Don Siriani.) State Sen. Susan Fargo (D-Lincoln) recently named Joe Kearns Goodwin of Concord as her pick to succeed her as the Third Middlesex District’s voice in the Massachusetts State Senate. Fargo, who has served 16 years as State Senator, noted that Goodwin has demonstrated a sincere commitment to, and concern for, the residents of the Third Middlesex District throughout his campaign. “To be effective, a senator must listen, learn and lead and that is what I have done throughout my time in the Legislature. I have listened to each of the candidates in this race, I've learned how they evaluate the responsibilities of this office and how they treat voters, and that is why I am proud to …

Candidates say they are ready to take on Ed Markey.
A trio of Republicans in the new fifth district are vying for the opportunity to challenge Ed Markey for his long-held seat in congress. Voters heading to the polls for Thursday's primary in the new district will see three names on the ballot for the Republican nomination: Tom Tierney, Frank Addivinola and Jeff Semon. Each of the three wants the chance to topple Ed Markey, a Democrat from Malden. It's a tall task -- Markey has been elected to 18 consecutive terms and has never won by less than 28 points. But his district has been re-aligned since his last election in 2010, and it has added Southborough, Ashland, Holliston, Sherborn, most of Sudbury and about half of Cambridge. The district shuffle could create an opportunity for whichever …

Sudbury resident Don Chauls asks vandals to leave election signs in homeowners' yards.

Another election time is upon us. Signs for the candidates of both parties have begun to proliferate on the yards of many Sudbury residents. Although a few folks might not like to see their quiet streets become places to visibly ‘shout’ the name of a contender for a state or national position, this is the meaning of freedom of speech. Propagating the names of candidates in this and other ways is democracy in action, one of the crucial ways of being American. During the last election season, in 2010, vandals stole or destroyed 43 yard signs belonging to Democratic candidates. Neither the Sudbury police nor the homeowners from whose yards those signs were stolen were able to identify the culprits. Presumably, they do their dirty business in…

Six-term Congressman and Waltham’s former voice in the U.S. House, Joe Kennedy II has endorsed Joe Kearns Goodwin for State Senate in Massachusetts' Third Middlesex District. Citing Goodwin’s work with General Electric’s clean energy division and experience as an Army platoon leader in Iraq and Strategic Advisor to NATO forces in Afghanistan, Kennedy said Goodwin is the best candidate running for state Senate in the Third Middlesex District. Kennedy said, "Joe Kearns Goodwin has honorably served his country and his community. I’ve known him all his life and admire his passion for public service and helping others. He’ll make a great state Senator. " “Congressman Kennedy has always stood up for our state’s most vulnerable residents both …

I open my refrigerator to stare down last week’s meatloaf. I sniff. Is it still edible? It was good last week but I’m so tired of leftovers. That’s the State Senate race. Folks are endorsing leftovers because they were good 20 years ago. Five Democratic candidates include three fresh entrees, but there’s not enough shelf space. Let’s clear out some leftovers and make room for the new candidates. Joe Kearns Goodwin, Alex Buck and Mara Dolan deserve a place in the future of the Democratic Party. Joe Kearns Goodwin is my strong recommendation among these new and capable candidates. Brian Hart 26 Hilltop Drive Bedford, MA 01730

Does living in a Democratic state mean you can’t go public about being pro-life?
When my 18-year-old daughter arrived home for spring break in March of 2012, she made an Acton bucket list of sorts. At the top of Jackie’s list: go to Town Hall to register to vote. This coming November, she’ll make the trek from Chestnut Hill to the RJ Grey Junior High gym to cast her first ballot. Jackie won’t be at the dinner table participating in “election talk” with her political-junkie dad this fall. She won’t be at the high school listening to Mary Price Maddox explain the complexities of the issues. But I have no doubt that she’ll be paying attention to the messages put forth by both the Democrats and the Republicans who hope to win her vote. I am confident that my daughter will be able to discern most of the differences between…
