SPS Extends Whitson's Contract for FY14

School committee unanimously approves the recommendation of Finance Director Mary Will despite undercooked chicken incident.

One incident in February 2012 where Sudbury Public Schools students were served undercooked chicken was enough for SPS to make a change in its food and nutrition specialist. Nearly one year later, it happened again, but with a different vendor. The difference? The new vendor is getting a second chance. During its May 29 meeting, the SPS Committee unanimously approved to extend the contract of Whitson's at the request of Finance Director Mary Will. "It's been somewhat rocky," Will said. "There's been lot of new personnel, a new manager, a lot of getting organized, getting settled. To their credit they worked hard to iron out some of the issues." Among the challenges that are being worked out is the quality of the lunch menu. Will said …

Sudbury Group Bails Out SPS from Security Donation Flap

The school committee voted to accept a $35K gift from Sudbury Extended Day Board of Directors, which covers 2/3 of the total cost.

Thanks to Sudbury Extended Care Board of Directors, Sudbury Public Schools won't have to foot the entire bill for a new security system after losing out on a chance to have it paid in full earlier this year by an anonymous donor. The SPS School Committee voted to accept a $35,000 gift from Sudbury Extended Day to help pay for the recently installed security cameras and buzzers. "They have space in each of our schools," Superintendent Anne Wilson said, "and they have utilized the system to keep after-school programs safe." SPS missed out on upgrading its security for free after timing issues prevented an anonymous donation from being used. "We did have an offer of a donation to supply the materials for the elementary schools," Wilson said …

The first question asked when the donation was first proposed was if this would violate the competitive bidding process. Nothing else need be said.   more ›

Robison Keeps Chairmanship on Sudbury Public Schools Committee

New member Scott Nassa asks for commitments regarding adding agenda items, allowing the public to speak freely at meetings.

With one member entering her third year, two entering their second, and a brand new member sitting in on his first meeting, the Sudbury Public Schools Committee decided during its May 15 meeting the most experienced member of the quintet should continue to be the chairman. After a tumultuous year that included the dismissal of former teacher Janice Donahue, the dismissal of administrator Peter Fardig, and a lawsuit from a former secretary, the SPS Committee will once again be led by Rich Robison. "I think we’ve introduced a fair amount of change in our district the past 12 months, maybe further," said Committee member Bob Armour, who is entering his second year. "We have to be careful in introducing too much change in SPS." Scott Nassa, …

Rich, it must "be draining" for you to constantly be reminding the people that elected you of the fact that their opinion does not matter and that you and Gutch are smarter than everyone in town. It must be "draining" to constantly have to remind the taxpayers of Sudbury that you know what is best for them and their opinion should not even be heard. We need 4 more Scott Nassa like people with a …   more ›

SPS Plans Better Communication with New Cable Show

'Be In the Know About SPS' has already taped two shows with Superintendent Anne Wilson and Assistant Superintendent Todd Curtis.

For almost a year parents of Sudbury Public Schools students have said they want more transparency from the school committee and Superintendent Anne Wilson after the sudden dismissals of former Noyes Elementary School teacher Janice Donahue and Curtis Middle School Administrator Peter Fardig. The school committee thinks it has a solution that will appeal to all parents. According to SPS Committee member Lucie St. George, a new monthly cable show has been created on SudburyTV, "Be In the Know About SPS." "Our mission for 'Be in the Know About SPS' is to further communicate to you by showcasing various administrators and staff, giving residents a chance to hear more in depth about what we are doing for our children and to keep viewers better…

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Grateful for Your Support

Newly elected Sudbury Public Schools Committee member Scott Nassa offers thanks to those in town who voted for him and helped with his campaign.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the many people who helped and supported me during my campaign for the Sudbury Public School Committee. I could not have possibly done it without every single one of their efforts. Whether it was a sign placement, letter of endorsement, spreading the word to friends and neighbors, words of encouragement or support at the polls - I will always be grateful to each and every person who supported me and consider them my friend. In addition, I would also like to thank my opponent Matthew Barach for a well-run race. I look forward to serving the children, parents, taxpayers, teachers and administrators of Sudbury over the next three years. This has been a long and worthwhile process. As I look back, I …

Hey So01776 - Scott's done a super job of articulating his own position of things. His "Stakeholders" charter seems pretty full and will likely require continued support from his constituency. Maybe keep the derisive, mean spirited and spiteful personal attacks for your own 1:1 conversations, or better yet not at all. There's already enough bad blood on the mat, let's not worry about former …   more ›

In Nassa They Trust

Scott Nassa defeats Matthew Barach for Sudbury Public Schools Committee seat.

He learned from his mistakes three years ago, and now he's newest member of the Sudbury Public Schools Committee. Scott Nassa narrowly defeated fellow challenger Matthew Barach, 1,257-1,191, Monday at Annual Town Election, three years after losing in the same race. "It's unbelievable," he said Monday night. "Just unbelievable." Nassa will replace current vice chair Lisa Gutch. Nassa said he was a little worried about the race after getting to know Barach over the past week. He said Barach is "a class act." "I hope he stays active with the committee," he said. "I really do like him." Nassa said in his first year he hopes to open the communication between the stakeholders and committee. "Like I said in my letters, I plan to have monthly …

VIDEO: Election Day Arrives in Sudbury [Updated: 11:26 A.M.]

Sudbury Patch will provide updates throughout the day.

Sudbury's Annual Town Election is off to a slow start according to the numbers supplied by the Town Clerk's office at 11 a.m: Precincts "It’s quiet," Elain Fortney of the Town Clerk's office said, "but we’ll see what happens later." Since Special Town Meeting in September there has been a strong effort by numerous residents in town to continue its push to add two seats to its Board of Selectmen. The town overwhelmingly voted in favor of the change, but after those against it petitioned to the State Legislature late last year, the town has been forced to vote again today. The race for Sudbury Public Schools Committee is another hot-button item today, as hopefuls Scott Nassa and Matthew Barach vie for Vice Chair Lisa Gutch's seat. Gutch …

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Vote for Matthew Barach Today

Annual Town Election is today and resident Alison Whitebone shares who she's voting for for Sudbury Public Schools Committee.

It is with great enthusiasm that I support Matt Barach's candidacy for the Sudbury School Committee in the March town election. Matt is an active listener. He hears all sides, asks solid questions, and then suggests logical and creative solutions. I have witnessed Matt helping his clients solve difficult problems and developing new organizational systems when needed.  Matt believes in giving everyone a voice and supports 3-5. He works with a wide spectrum of our town – inspiring our town soccer players, negotiating as a trustworthy lawyer, and serving on the Land Acquisition Review Committee. Matt wants all Sudbury students to achieve their highest potential and he has the experience and knowledge to help Sudbury achieve this mission. He …
