DISCUSSION: Will the Senior Tax Plan Benefit Sudbury?

The town voted 'yes' during Special Town Election, but only 15 percent of the registered voters voted.

Sudbury made its voice heard, even though few made the effort. The senior tax exemption, a plan that will reduce the property taxes of senior residents whose bill from the town is more than 10 percent of their household income, passed by a 2-to-1 margin Tuesday during Special Town Election. The unprecedented move means the town will pay for the exemption through a shift of the total town tax burden. It will not become part of the town's budget. Other residents' bills will rise between a half-percent to one percent. As an example, homes billed $8,000 can expect to pay $40 to $80 more per year.
