Gloucester Runs Over Lincoln-Sudbury

The Fighting Fishermen beat the Warriors with their staple two-pronged rushing attack to earn another Superbowl berth.

Opening up with a heavy dose of Gilbert Brown and finishing with a supplement of Jordan Shairs, the Gloucester seniors rushed over Lincoln-Sudbury Tuesday night to win 21-0 and advance to the MIAA Division 1A Superbowl for the fourth straight time. Doing so with their staple rush-heavy attack, the defending champs continued a two-season win streak and eliminated the Warriors from their first playoff appearance since 1997. "They were just tougher than we were," said L-S coach Thomas Lopez. "They marched the ball down the field and physically beat us up." Brown rushed for 94 yards on 12 attempts in the first half and finished with a total of 120 yards on 19 attempts. Shairs filled in for Brown in the second half by running for 83 yards and …

L-S Football Team Looks for Perfection in Playoff Opener

Warriors believe ball control and turnovers are key to challenging Gloucester.

Lincoln-Sudbury football coach Thomas Lopez may face one his biggest challenges this season playing Gloucester Tuesday night at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School. However, Lopez believes the basics of ball control and limiting turnovers are the keys to victory in the semifinals of the MIAA Division 1A EMass playoffs. "The best way to stop scoring is to keep control of the ball, because they can not score if they do not have the ball," said Lopez. "We have to play mistake-free, no dropping a pass, missing a block or throwing an interception." Keeping the Division 1A defending champs off the field has been a challenge for its opponents as the Fighting Fisherman have not lost in two seasons. The Northeastern Large champs, who are ranked No…

UPDATED 3 P.M.: Lincoln-Sudbury Takes Care of Business On Thanksgiving

The Warriors beat rival Newton South, 21-7, to finish undefeated in conference.

Despite a conference title and a postseason berth in the bag, the Lincoln-Sudbury football team came into Thanksgiving morning ready to defend one last regular-season accomplishment — an undefeated conference record. The Warriors took care of business by defeating Newton South, 21-7, at home to finish the season 5-0 in the Dual County League Large. "Coach said that last time we won the DCL outright was '92," said L-S senior Zach Smerlas. "I was not even born in '92. It is unbelievable." With the Warriors up only 7-0 at halftime, it looked as if the Lions had a shot upset the conference winners. However, the Warriors opened the second half by scoring on their first two drives. "We were not throwing the ball too much at first, but once we …

L-S, Newton South Have Eyes On Thanksgiving Day Victory

Holiday rivalry still means something to these teams.

Playoffs and standings may no longer be on the line for Lincoln-Sudbury or Newton South football teams on Thursday, but that does not mean neither team will overlook their 36-year-old Thanksgiving rivalry. With a home victory, the Warriors will finish undefeated in the Dual County League (Large), while a Newton South upset over the league winner would be strong finish to a tough season. "Even though mathematically this game does not matter, it still matters to us," said L-S senior Zach Smerlas. "It is still a Dual County League game and we are trying to go 5-0 in the DCL (Large)," said L-S senior Ben Forman. The Warriors (7-3, 4-0) are coming off  four straight conference wins, during which they clinched their first playoff appearance …

L-S Seniors Will Leave Success and Leadership Behind on the Gridiron

After beginning their careers as freshmen with first-year jitters, these have grown into leaders.

The senior class on the Lincoln-Sudbury football team has transformed from wide-eyed freshmen to strong-willed leaders this year. The group has settled in to create a sense of camaraderie and expected accomplishment that they hope will last after they graduate. "All of us came together this year," said senior Ryan Swoyer. "There are a lot of talented juniors and sophomores and they are all close." "[We] have just as much leadership and this is because we share that with them," added senior Marc Pace. During their sophomore year, they finished 9-2, one win short of the playoffs. This year, they are 7-3 and are headed to the playoffs. The players linked coaching and upperclassmen leadership to their overall success. "When you are around a …

Lincoln-Sudbury Seniors Look to Add Positive Chapter in its Football History Book

As the Warriors prepare for the postseason, they await the chance to finish what former players started.

As the Lincoln-Sudbury football team's seniors proceed to program's first postseason appearance in 13 years, they will have chance to not only finish what others couldn't, but to do something that has not been done in 21 years by winning a championship. Either way, when they play Gloucester (10-0) in two weeks, they will have already made their own history. "You think of all the seniors that have come before us," said senior tight end Ben Forman. "It is just amazing to know that we are the group of seniors that went to the playoffs." The Warriors' upperclassmen began their high school football career by watching a 7-1 Lincoln-Sudbury team fail to advance via a three-way Dual County League tie breaker with Acton-Boxborough and Wayland in …

L-S and Newton South Thanksgiving Rivalry Has Deep Roots

Warriors coach Thomas Lopez began as a Newton South senior captain in 1964 and has since seen the rivalry bloom into a 36-year tradition.

Lincoln-Sudbury football coach Thomas Lopez has a long history with his upcoming opponent and Thanksgiving rival, Newton South. In fact, Lopez, who has coached for 33 years, began his long football career as a Newton South senior captain in 1964 long before the annual holiday matchup existed. Over the years, Lopez has seen what was originally just an in-conference game bloom into a 36-year tradition "It was back in the mid 60s when I played and things were much different back then," said Lopez. "Newton South was not playing Lincoln-Sudbury and L-S did not even have a football team." After graduating high school and playing four years as a tight end at Bates College, Lopez taught middle school in Sudbury worked as an assistant for a newly …

Warriors' Rushers Lead L-S Over Boston Latin And Into Playoffs

Warriors clinch the Dual County League Large title; will play in postseason for the first time since 1997.

The Lincoln-Sudbury football team needed a victory Friday night to snap a lengthy playoff drought. To help achieve that goal, the Warriors' three-pronged rushing attack did what they have all season — deliver. With senior Marc Pace and sophomores Brian Carroll and Christopher Giorgio each reaching the end zone, L-S's top rushers helped lead the Warriors to a 24-7 road victory over Boston Latin, a Dual County League Large title, and a postseason berth for the first time since 1997. "It is pretty exciting to do something for the first time in 13 years," said Pace. "We have this opportunity as seniors that only a few teams in the state have." Pace combined for 104 yards and two touchdowns on nine touches, while Carroll totaled 108 yards and …

L-S Offensive Line Up To Any Challenge

After a slow start to the season, this group is now among the league's elite.

In the beginning of the year Lincoln-Sudbury football coach Thomas Lopez left a challenge for his offensive line. After six games of uncertainty, the coach has settled on a group of players who continually meet his challenges. "Coach told us at the beginning of the year that he did not know what to expect from us," said junior lineman Chris Whitehouse. "He told us that we were nice kids off the field, but he wanted us to be more mean and aggressive on the field." The Warriors' line, which lacked a returning starter, began the season with some uncertainty. After rotating through players in their pre-Dual County Large schedule, Lopez settled on a starting line that includes guards Ryan Swoyer and Patrick Mullin, tackles Tim Krumsiek and …

Lincoln-Sudbury Football Team One Win Away from Postseason Berth

Warriors' 10-7 victory over Colonials puts them in the driver's seat to win DCL Large.

When the Lincoln-Sudbury football team looks back on its 2010 campaign, it will likely recall its early November game against rival Acton-Boxborough as the turning point to the season. A win would put them in control of the Dual County League Large, while a loss would make it very difficult for the Warriors to earn a playoff berth. After Friday night's grind out 10-7 victory over the Colonials, and with two games remaining against less-talented opponents, a playoff berth almost seems certain. In what was a grind out game for both sides, the Warriors (5-3, 3-0) managed to score early and slow down the Colonials' offense. "In all honesty Waltham, Westford, and Acton are all good teams," said L-S coach Thomas Lopez of his last three opponents…
