LETTER TO THE EDITOR: It's All in the Arithmetic

Resident Dan De Pompei says a change in the town's number of selectmen does not change essence of Sudbury.

What Sudbury residents have recently proposed in a petition to the State Legislature is a change to the composition of our Board of Selectmen from three members to five. This is a very simple change that provides an incremental increase in the range and depth of experience, capability and combined intelligence of the "Chief Executive Function" of our Town.  The change does not create conflict with our 28-year-old Home Rule Charter. It does not change the structure of our government. It does not change the powers or the duties of the Town. It does not change the Legislative Branch or the "Chief Executive Function" (BOS). It does not change the manner in which any member of Town Government is elected or appointed and it does not change any …

Growth mandated a larger BOS back then just as it does today. Sudbury is a little slow in making changes.   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Time for Sudbury to Work Together

Resident Michael Troiano says everybody working as one will make the change in the Board of Selectmen, and other facets of town government, succeed.

There have been a few unkind accusations hurled at me in the last couple of weeks. I guess that’s part of our town’s political culture for now, and know it’s something folks on both sides of the political divide have had to deal with for a few years now. The one that really stung, though, was the accusation that the move from 3-5 Selectmen in Sudbury – which was petitioned, presented, debated, and adopted according to the rules of our town – reflects something other than the collective will of Sudbury’s citizens. It’s been painted in some corners as some kind of back-room deal… backed by a sinister fringe group, then pushed through a last-minute town meeting pre-packed with social media fanatics and “tea-party obstructionists,” as the good…

VIDEO: Residents, O'Brien Spar Over Article 4 and Proposed Amendments

The move to expand the Board of Selectmen passed at Special Town Meeting despite two motions to amend the original article.

O'brien's comments were made as an individual and not in official capacity. I learned today that the moderator advised they should speak from the floor as residents, rather than in their official capacity which would have been implied if their comments were presented from the stage.   more ›

LIVE BLOG: Special Town Meeting

Whether you are at Lincoln-Sudbury with your laptop or smart phone, or you home watching SudburyTV, join us as Sudbury votes on increasing the Board of Selectmen to 5 members, roof repairs, and other warrant articles.

Greetings from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School as we are less than an hour away from the start of Special Town Meeting. I think we can all agree if a certain vote goes a certain way for a certain warrant article, Sept. 24, 2012, will indeed be deemed special by many residents. Since the night of May 8 when "Lavendergate" was borne, the town has been split over the actions of two selectmen, the town manager, and one other town employee who was cited for a third OUI that night. (An update on Elizabeth Rust's court case will be available just after midnight.) Residents have demanded answers, the Board chairman has recused himself from any conversation regarding Lavender, and the other two selectmen have argued over the proper way end the…

Sudbury Man Asks Residents to Vote Down Article 4 Through Email

Carl Offner says the move from 3 selectmen to 5 is 'mischievous in intent.'

(EDITOR'S NOTE: The following unedited email was forwarded to Sudbury Patch.) Dear friends-- You have probably seen these inexplicable signs around town about voting for "3 - 5" selectmen.  What's going on is this: The same crew of destructive close-to-Tea-Party obstructionists that has been trying to take over Sudbury for the last few years has now proposed that the number of Selectman in Sudbury be raised from 3 to 5.  This will be voted on this Monday evening (September 24, 7:30 PM) at a Special Town Meeting. It's a curious motion.  Of course, many towns do have 5 selectmen, and there is nothing either right or wrong about this.  My own suspicion is that by having an election with more than one open slot, they could succeed in getting …

SueChap, Just to clarify, Jim Kelly did not state that the building was in poor condition--he specifically said that it had "...good bones..." actually. The ROOF is in poor condition. It is not common practice to ignore a failing roof. I for one am not comfortable with demolishing an entire building because the ROOF needs replacing. It had a 15 year warranty and Sudbury has been extending that …   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Nixon Roof Estimate is Higher

Sudbury Public Schools Committee Vice Chair Lisa Gutch says the updated estimate is $38,000 more than previously reported.

Several weeks ago, an estimate of $750,000 for Article 1, Roof Replacement and Repair - Nixon Elementary School, was submitted for the Sept. 24 Special Town Meeting Official Warrant.  Since the time that the Warrant was published, the architect who has been assigned to Sudbury by the Massachusetts School Building Authority has completed an initial design for the roof.  This week, with the completion of this design work, we were given an updated estimate that is $38,000 higher than the estimate provided for the Town Warrant.  The estimate that will be presented at the Special Town Meeting on Monday is $788,000.   Respectfully, Lisa Gutch Vice Chair Sudbury School Committee

To borrow and amend slightly Lisa's very clear explanation here: http://sudbury.patch.com/articles/letter-to-the-editor-time-to-fix-nixon-school-roof The estimated cost of the Nixon roof project is $788,000 (the amended cost) plus the cost of debt issuance. Sudbury is eligible to receive 36.89% of approved costs in reimbursement from the MSBA. In order to participate in this cost-sharing, the …   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Let's Not Rush to Increase Number of Selectmen

Residents Stan Kaplan and Carmine Gentile ask for a a non-partisan group to study the warrant article and report back next year at Annual Town Meeting.

Board of Selectmen Expansion Article 4 at Special Town Meeting  September 24th A petition article has been placed on the warrant for the September 24th Special Town Meeting to increase the Board of Selectmen (BOS) from three to five members. We believe that this issue needs some non-partisan study so that Town Meeting voters can make an informed vote. The Sudbury League of Women Voters would be a neutral party to conduct this study, should they agree to undertake this assignment, and report back at the 2013 Annual Town Meeting in May. Questions to consider: We don’t know the answers to these and other concerns but we can tell you that Sudbury’s three-member BOS has worked well now for hundreds of years, so what’s the rush? A Special Town …

VIDEO: Selectmen Not Opposed to Adding 2 Members

Sudbury's board hears resident Michael Troiano's argument for expanding to 5 members. Selectman John Drobinski worries about the process to make it happen.

If any article requires more time to think through I would say it's Article 2 in regard to replacing the roof at Fairbanks. As Bob Haarde pointed out last night is it worth it to put $600,000 into an outdated building or is it a better idea to save the $600,000 and put it toward a new community center. Look not further than Concord to see what an asset to an entire town a new community center can…   more ›

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sudbury Can Survive a 5-Member Board of Selectmen

Resident Pat Brown gives many reasons supporting an increase of selectmen from 3 to 5.

Article 4 at the Special Town Meeting on Sept. 24 proposes expanding Sudbury’s Board of Selectmen from three to five members. Such a change has been proposed before, but it has never been adopted.  The most obvious advantage of increasing the Board is that the workload could be distributed among more members. Yes, all five members would have to attend all the meetings, but each member would be able to attend a smaller number of outside meetings such as legislative, state and regional gatherings, ceremonial and charitable events. Each member would have fewer boards and committees with which to communicate. And we know that five selectmen works — we can see it in surrounding communities. I spoke recently with one of the five Acton selectmen…

If the proponents of this article really feel they're doing something right for the town, I'm confused as to why this isn't on the warrant for the Annual Town Meeting. I have yet to meet a resident who is even aware of next Monday's meeting. Late September is a particularly busy time for Sudbury residents/parents, and an excellent time to minimize Town Meeting quorums. Without taking a position …   more ›
