New Sudbury Board of Selectmen Seats Go to Simon, Woodard

Town also approves ballot questions on new police station, Town Center improvements.

Sudbury’s two new seats on its Board of Selectmen will be filled by a former finance committee member, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail Committee.

Chuck Woodard and Leonard Simon won the June 25 Special Town Election, capping Sudbury’s quest to expand the Board, which began a year ago.

Woodard, the former FINCOM member, defeated Thaddeus Gozdeck by a meer 25 votes, 2,267-2,242. The big surprise in the race for the two-year seat was that 355 votes went to Eric Poch, who pulled out of the race last week.

In the race for the three-year seat, Simon defeated Dan DePompei handily, 2,570-2,265. For DePompei, it was his second attempt in two years to get on the Board.

Neither Woodard nor Simon immediately returned calls and emails seeking comment Tuesday night.

There were 5,390 votes cast, representing 45 percent of the town's 12,047 registered voters.

Also on the ballot were two questions related to funding for a new police station and traffic improvements to Town Center.

Ballot Question No. 1 asked the Town of Sudbury be allowed to exempt from the provisions of proposition 2 ½, so called, the amounts required to pay for the bonds issued in order to provide professional and engineering services for the final design inclusive of construction documents for a new police station on Town-owned land on Hudson Road including the payment of all expenses incidental or related thereto. That passed 2,617- 2,527.

Ballot Question No. 2 asked the Town of Sudbury be allowed to assess an additional $700,000 in real estate and personal property taxes for the purpose of constructing traffic improvements to the Town  Center including the payment of all costs incidental or related thereto for the fiscal year  beginning July first 2013. That passed, 2,791- 2,431.

Sudbury also voted for Democrat Ed Markey to fill the vacant U.S. Senate seat. Markey defeated Republic Gabriel Gomez in Sudbury, 3,179-2,303. The Boston Globe reported Tuesday night Markey won the state-wide election.
